Start with your airline’s current limits
Carry-on limits differ across airlines, fares and aircraft. Measure the bag including wheels, side handles and external pockets, then compare with the allowance for the specific itinerary you use. Do not assume a bag labeled “international carry-on” will be accepted everywhere.
If you often fly budget airlines, a slightly smaller bag may offer more flexibility than a suitcase that fits one carrier exactly.
Two wheels or four?
Four-wheel spinner luggage rolls easily on smooth airport floors and can be convenient in queues. Two-wheel designs may feel more stable on rough sidewalks or uneven pavement because the wheels are often larger and partly recessed.
Your route matters. A traveler moving mostly through terminals may prioritize maneuverability; someone walking several blocks on older streets might choose durability and wheel clearance.
Choose your shell deliberately
Hard-shell luggage can offer structure and is easy to wipe down, but surface scuffs may be noticeable. Soft-sided luggage may provide exterior pockets and some flexibility; water resistance and material quality vary widely in both categories.
Check the zippers, seams and handle mechanism. A well-designed telescoping handle should extend comfortably for your height without wobbling excessively.
Inspect the interior layout
Compression panels are useful if you pack a similar wardrobe for every trip. Dividers help keep footwear separate from clothing; a large unstructured compartment may be easier for oddly shaped items.
Do not overvalue promotional “expanded capacity” if expanding the suitcase would exceed your airline’s limits. Check how much usable interior space remains after wheel housings and handle rails.
Weight and repairability
The lighter the empty bag, the more allowance you retain for what you pack. But ultra-lightweight construction is not automatically more durable. Look for replacement wheels, handles, zipper repair information and a warranty that explains what is actually covered.
If possible, try pushing the bag fully loaded around a room, over a threshold and around a tight corner before committing to it.
